Baby Rat Development
From birth to 6 weeks

10 Hours 10 Hours - They are bright pink and only weigh 6–8 grams (not much more than a nickel). Their eyes and ear canals are sealed. The light spot on their left side is a tummy full of milk.

36 Hours - The babies are showing pigment, eye color, and have clearly put on weight. 36 Hours

5 Days 5 Days - Their coats are beginning to develop and you can usually tell what color they will be. Their ears are up but the ear canals are still sealed.

11 Days - Their coats are well developed and their ear canals are beginning to open. They are becoming more mobile. 11 Days

2 Weeks 14 Days (2 Weeks) - This is the day their eyes open and they begin to explore their cage.

2½ Weeks - Their eyes and ear canals have been open for a few days. Their coats have become soft and fuzzy, and they are eating, walking, and beginning to play. 2½ Weeks

4 Weeks 4 Weeks - They are eating everything in sight and growing at a phenomenal rate. Mom is beginning to wean them and they spend their waking hours playing very hard.

6 Weeks - The babies are well developed, completely weaned, and ready to go to their permanent homes to be wonderful pets. Males and females MUST be separated at this age. 10 Hours
